GEO vs SEO: what changes, and what doesn't
Search engine optimization earns you a position on a results page. Generative engine optimization earns you a place inside the answer itself. The disciplines overlap more than the hype suggests — but the differences decide where your next content dollar should go.
TL;DR
SEO optimizes pages to rank in a list of links. GEO optimizes your brand's presence across the sources AI engines cite — your site, reviews, communities and editorial — so the answer names you. Same foundations, different unit of competition, different scoreboard. Most teams need both, weighted by where their buyers actually ask.

What stays the same
The boring fundamentals carry over completely. Content that answers a real question, structured so machines can parse it, hosted on a crawlable site, backed by genuine authority. A page that wins featured snippets is often already citable — engines select sources much the way a careful researcher would. If your SEO program produces genuinely useful content, GEO is an extension, not a restart.
→ CRAWLABILITY AND CLEAN STRUCTURE STILL GATE EVERYTHING→ E-E-A-T STILL DECIDES WHO GETS TRUSTED→ GOOD CONTENT STILL BEATS CONTENT VOLUME
What actually changes
You optimize a brand, not a page. An AI answer is assembled from many sources at once. If G2, two listicles and a Reddit thread say your competitor is the default choice, your beautifully optimized landing page loses to their footprint. GEO work therefore spends heavily off-site: reviews, communities, editorial coverage, comparison content.
The demand data is invisible. There is no “search volume” for prompts. You choose what to track by knowing your buyers — the questions they ask at each stage — and you validate with the referral traffic AI answers send you.
Measurement moves downstream. There are no impressions to count inside ChatGPT. The scoreboard becomes: how often you appear in answers (visibility), against whom (share of voice), from which sources (citations), and what that traffic does on your site (AI-sourced sessions and conversions in GA4).
So which do you invest in?
Both — the question is the ratio. If your buyers are developers, ops leaders or younger B2B evaluators, a meaningful share of your funnel already starts in an AI assistant, and every quarter you're absent from those answers compounds a competitor's lead. Most Volexi customers keep their SEO program intact and layer GEO on top: the same content engine, pointed at the answers, with its own scoreboard.
